Drum Corps International (DCI) has captivated audiences for decades with its dazzling displays of musical and marching precision. But in recent years, some fans have worried about the activity’s trajectory. Here are a few factors that have sparked discussions about DCI’s evolution:

  1. Staff Overload: DCI corps seem to be accumulating ever-larger staffs. While experienced instructors are crucial, a bloated support system can lead to a disconnect between performers and the activity’s core – music and marching.

  2. Prop Proliferation: Elaborate sets and props are becoming increasingly common. While visual storytelling can be impressive, an overreliance on spectacle risks overshadowing the musicality and athleticism that define drum corps.

  3. Costumes vs. Tradition: The constant churn of “costumes” – often more akin to elaborate theatrics than uniforms – can leave some fans yearning for the days of recognizable corps identities. Traditional uniforms fostered a sense of heritage and connection to the corps’ legacy.

These trends have culminated in a feeling of some fans being left behind. The recent folding of The Cadets, a corps with a rich 90+ year history, sent shockwaves through the community.

One of the most decorated drum corps ever, The Cadets (founded 1934 in Garfield, NJ as the Holy Name Cadets) is the oldest active corps of its kind. For nearly a century, the corps has led the marching arts, pioneering movement, instrumentation, and technology. They’ve won 10 American Legion National Championships and 10 Drum Corps International World Championships.

Is DCI losing its heart? Is there a way to recapture the magic of the past while embracing innovation?

These are questions that DCI, corps directors, and fans alike will have to grapple with. DCI’s future may depend on its ability to strike a balance between tradition and progress, ensuring that the core elements that make drum corps special – the dedication of the performers and the power of music and movement – remain at the forefront.
