Crazy Good!

There are very few drummers out there who have that rare combination of stupid chops, punishing power, and groove-laden pocket playing. Benny Greb and Chris Coleman are two such players. When listening to Greb play, you might feel like you had just taken a few hits of LSD and broke through the time-space continuum.

Greb is so clean and has such impeccable time, you might think that a metronome clicks to him rather than the other way around. Take this for example:

He seems to dance around ‘the 1’ saying “fuck you, I do want I want!” Then he kicks you in the teeth as he throws down the syncopation. All this while you are knocked out looking at the backs of your lids as your body convulses to the groove. It’s very evident that he can play. And when playing, he will lose people because he has such clean feel-changes and appears to be all around the beat rather than right on it. Sooo cool!

As for heavy-hands, take a look at this!!! Coleman punishes the kit in a wild array of 6-limbed dexterity. He of a whirling-dervish that is telling the drums “bring it bro!!” Since you can see that Coleman is a large and imposing man, it’s not hard to imagine him playing so hard and aggressive, yet it is hard to imagine it so clean and so fast. Case in point; he starts to build into the first push at 2:25 then at 2:40 goes loco!

This mo-fo throws it in your face, smiles and chews his gum like it’s just another day at the office.

Makes me want to throw my sticks in the damn garbage.
